NSW Air Conditioner Rebate 2026: Upgrade Incentive

Short answer

NSW takes up to $550↗ off a new 6 kW air conditioner, or up to $560↗ when a 6 kW split system replaces an old one. It is an upfront discount, with a minimum payment↗, and only installers partnered with an Accredited Certificate Provider↗ can offer it. So the discount you see depends on who quotes.

The discount travels through two businesses before it reaches your quote.

The two amounts sit within $10 of each other. What differs is the job: a first system, or a swap for an old unit. Both are quoted for 6 kW, which by Canstar Blue's rule of 0.12 to 0.15 kW per m²↗ suits about 40 to 50 m². Think a large open-plan living area in a Parramatta townhouse, not a bedroom.

Is it a rebate?

No. The NSW Government is clear that this is an upfront discount, with a minimum payment↗. You will not receive money after the install. The installer takes the amount off before you pay, and because a minimum payment applies, a free air conditioner is not on offer. If someone promises one, walk away.

Who is eligible?

all NSW households and small businesses may be eligible↗. The exception is a home that already has an efficient air conditioner. The incentive is based on the energy your upgrade saves, and swapping one efficient unit for another saves little.

Why do installers offer different discounts?

Only installers partnered with an Accredited Certificate Provider↗ can apply the discount, and each sets its own price around it. That is why NSW advises getting quotes from more than one installer. Compare the final price you pay, not the size of the discount on the page.

Who can install the system?

The installer still needs a Refrigerant Handling Licence↗. Ask for the licence number with the quote. The ARCtick guide explains what the two licence types cover.
